Earlier this week the internet was treated to just what kind of Doctor Capaldi might be based on his costume. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, and more than that have already been said about this costume, we’re looking at how it stacks up to previous outfits.
Several people have said online that they think the new direction with the costume is drastically too simple, and that the red lining is a bit too vamp. Taking a glance at previous versions of the Doctor though (yes, even the War Doctor) we can see that perhaps with the exception of Colin Baker, the Doctor has always been pretty consistent with outfits, with each having two things in common, first the the costume in general was never very outstanding, but (and this is the second thing all had in common), there was one thing about each costume that did stand out a bit.
For Tom Baker, is was his scarf (which is ridiculous to knit). For Peter Davidson it was the celery. Christopher Eccleston rocked the leather jacket, Tennant’s tennis shoes are what gave his, otherwise average, pinstripes a bit of flair, and even John Hurt’s buttons and buckles offered an almost steampunk style.
With Capaldi’s costume if it weren’t for the red lining, there’d really be nothing to it. The costume though is exactly what Moffat in a press release described it as though:
“He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”
My question though, is how will the costume be a part of the character? After all one of the best part of Matt Smith’s costume was watching him straighten that bow tie. Why do you think fans wept when he removed it in the Christmas special? With Capaldi as Number 12 (or 13, if you want to get technical, unless Hurt was like an extension of Paul McGann) anyway, where was I?
Ah, yes with Capaldi as 12, will he wince every time his incredibly sharp coat gets a stain or tear?
If nothing else the costume has given people assumptions about just what kind of personality Number Twelve will have. It seems to be that, in contrast to Eleven’s entertaining hyper-activity, that Twelve will be quieter, sharper, and with a dash of snark. I could be all wrong though. The only thing that I know for sure though is that Fall can’t come fast enough.
Final questions are what will the TARDIS, or his sonic screwdirver look like? Also, what’s his catchphrase going to be?
What are your thoughts on the costume, let us know in our poll, or in the comments!
