If you haven’t heard the insane SKREEONK or roar online this past week regarding Godzilla coming out in 2014, then don’t stress because this blog will cover what you need to know and then some. Below is the terrifying trailer, and below that is a breakdown of some tidbits that Warner Brothers and Legendary seem willing to let go of through their viral site www.mutoresearch.net. The breakdown includes some screenshots from the trailer (while just in case of copyright issues, I’ll plainly state, in no way do I own the images in this blog. They’re directly from the trailer… or the M.U.T.O. site) and I’ve put the screenshots in the order of how I think they actually fit in the movie chronologically, along with some predictions about the film.
Now, if you want to spend a ton of time playing around with the M.U.T.O. site have at it, there were a few responses to the commands typed in that were fun (like “ROAR” resulting in “SKREEONK!”), and here’s a short list of what I think are some vital ones. It was only later though that a friend sent me a link to an already established wiki page, that has the full list (EXCEPT for 1 I found… DERWEZE…yeah I feel awesome).
So, actor names result in a reminder of the character they play, and the character names give tidbits, for example:
Joseph Brody: Unarchiving Performance Record for Brody, Joseph. One Moment… [unauthorized access request] Record [BRODYX12F] HAS BEEN FLAGGED BY MONARCH. YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED IF THIS BECOMES DECLASSIFIED. IF YOU THINK THIS HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED IN ERROR, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SECURITY ADMINISTRATOR.
And several commands that would lead to info get “FLAGGED BY MONARCH” and of course leads to questions about who or what MONARCH is. Could MONARCH be the first letter in the acronym M.U.T.O? But even so, that only gives us so much, As far as figuring out what M.U.T.O. does isn’t difficult, when you start looking up the names of various creatures like:
AKIRA: DNA IDENTIFIED
MOTHRA: SYSTEM CANNOT CONFIRM OR DENY THE EXISTENCE OF THIS LIFE FORM.
And searching for Godzilla, gets the same response as Mothra, and other giant monsters he’s faced.
Now some of the viral stuff before the M.U.T.O. site was uncovered included shots of Derweze (referred to as the Gateway to Hell), and a huge sinkhole, and these words yield some interesting results. “Sinkhole” produced: [ZXO.E5SUSJSX] IDENT REDACTED… [EMBRYO] /COM X, and DERWEZE (by the way, this was the one command not listed on the wiki) resulted in this message: GAS RESERVES HOLDING. FIRE LAYER OBSCURING MEMBRANE LAYER AND FUELING INCUBATION.
So… from what I can tell M.U.TO. is growing monsters. For what purpose who knows, but they’ve got embryos. With the screen shots from the trailer, here’s my chronological expectation for the events of the film, and whether I’m right, wrong or somewhere in between is irrelevant, it’s gonna be EPIC
Now as I get to these predictions, I haven’t looked up any spoilers, I’m only going off of what was released at Comic-Con, the M.U.T.O. site, and the current trailer, and if you want spoilers I can at least tell you not to ask the M.U.T.O. site, because you won’t like the answer.
Any way, here’s my breakdown, and predictions:
M.U.T.O. has been doing research that goes quite awry, and I think it’s in the form of one of their creatures being born or getting loose and being too much for them to handle. They try to contain it but fail, which aligns with the system response for “CHONGQING: ABSEIL TEAM DESCENDED INTO SUBTERRANEAN CHAMBERS. INITIAL READINGS SUGGEST ANOTHER DEAD END. FULL REPORT PENDING”. Their failure to contain it results in, what I assume is a total shutdown and evacuation of the facilities, and hopefully the neighboring areas, likely because of what may be the military having to nuke the place (which makes tons of sense… though other military stuff later doesn’t, and I’ll get to that).
I’m guessing that not everyone gets out, which is how we end up with this touching scene with a very distressed Bryan Cranston (no matter what else happens in this movie, his acting is awesome… just saying).
Anyway, the nuke is dropped on Japan, but I’m guessing based on what we saw at Comic-Con (and no I won’t say what we saw, I know I’m giving a breakdown, but if I gave up all the info that I slept outside in the grass to get… well let’s just say I like that sometimes what happens at SDCC stays at SDCC), anyway, I’m guessing that not only does a nuke not solve the problem, but that things go from bad to worse. Thinking on a quote said by the Godzilla (1954) producer Tomoyuki Tanaka, was that “Godzilla is the son of the atomic bomb… the sacred beast of the apocalypse“. So I’m pretty sure that the bomb will wake what had been a previously slumbering beast.
At this point more of the military would be sent in… but for what exactly?
Because the only question I have now is… how’s it going to end? I mean the artful and time consuming (1:07 out of 2:21) sequence of the teaser (which was AMAZINGLY done… loved the music and the vocals that reminded me of a Greek tragedy) is the beginning. Looking at the slideshow of my favorite images from it, above, all I could think after everything sunk is what Kristopher Tapley so eloquently posted on twitter:
I mean as I watched them it was like they were descending into lower levels of Hell, and had no clue what they were up against. In all honesty though… I don’t care how it ends, I just can’t wait to see it!Post any of your thoughts about the Godzilla teaser, or the M.U.T.O. site!
