Sleepy Hollow Season 1 Episode 5 John Doe
The episode opened with a kid in the woods following after a little girl randomly picking flowers, the girl completely disappears, and we suddenly see a horseman following the boy, who makes it to a road before the horseman disintegrates.
Back in present day Ichabod is settling in to the cabin, and struggling with one of those awful plastic clamshell packages (which happens to contain a razor), now in all fairness to Ichabod those things are wretched. When he sees himself in the mirror and asks if he looks our of place Abbie teases him saying that he looks “good for 200”, and it’s nice to see the two of them becoming a team like this.
Now the boy at the beginning has been found, and when Abbie shows up Detective Morales (Abbie’s ex) expresses some dissatisfaction that Abbie is still bringing him to crime scenes, normally I’d ignore him, his character isn’t really that interesting, but I’ll get back to him at the end of this blog.
So, the boy, who’s name is Thomas, has black veins, and is clearly ill speaks “Middle English” from the Middle Ages, which, being the genius professor that he is, Ichabod speaks as well. When the get the boy contained Ichabod speaks to him, via a TV and the boy mentions the girl in the woods and that he’s from Roanoke, and not Roanoke, VA, he means Roanoke the Lost Colony. So (beware of spoilers ahead) I like the twist that they put on Roanoke, not only did they go with one theory that all the inhabitants died , but also that they were trapped in a sort of time bubble… and you have to walk on water to get there. Now maybe it’s because I’m a LOSTie at heart, but the fact that they found a time trapped/separated island with lost inhabitants which were “dead the whole time” (which isn’t truly correct about Lost)I couldn’t help but chuckle…. Anyway where was I?!?!?
Ah yes, so they come back and now Ichabod is sick with the plague so they have to quarantine him, and must sedate him to do so. During his drug induced coma Ichabod has what I’ll shall hence forth refer to as a “Katreama”, that is one of his dreams with Katrina. She’s in Purgatory with other trapped souls, and Ichabod doesn’t fully understand why Moloch would have the ability to trap her there, so I’m sure we’ll get more details on this realm, and what Katrina did to end up there as time goes on. Now as I’ve complained before sometimes I feel like Katrina makes things too easy, the Purgatory angle and if she were to “move on” from Purgatory it would likely sever her ability to communicate with Ichabod.
Now during this, the normally ignorable Detective Morales has done some digging on Ichabod and receives a phone call, supposedly from Oxford, confirming that they do have a Professor Ichabod Crane who is “on sabbatical” and lending his services to the police in America. Now I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that this call was coordinated by Captain Irving, as we all know where Ichabod came from. But if Morales actually reached out to Oxford, who really called him, AND what’s to stop the real Oxford from calling?!?!? I don’t have the answers to these questions, but I look forward to getting them!
Now then, as usual all is wrapped up by the end, Abbie, after visiting a chapel at the hospital where the plague victims are at, gets some (possibly divine) inspiration that the water in the town is what’s needed to keep the plague at bay. She is then, with Irving’s surprising cooperation, able to get Ichabod and Thomas out of the hospital as they are going to be transported to another location, so she can get them to the woods. Now I find this a tad ridiculous only because a missing ambulance containing two victims with a fast spreading disease, would definitely cause a panic, and a police operation to retrieve said ambulance… anyway, They get to the community, and in the water just in time, and Pestilence is thwarted. Which is becoming a bit routine but that’s ok, I’m happy to see them live for another episode.
What I’m also happy for is the new episode in three weeks (WHY three weeks you ask!?!?! I have no clue) but when the new episode comes we will hopefully see more of the Horseman, who looks like he’ll be bringing as much of hell with him as possibly, but what we will DEFINITELY see, is John Noble! I loved him on Fringe and I’m so excited that he’ll have a role on Sleepy Hollow!
So thanks for reading, happy watching and feel free to comment below!
